I've been meaning to try dim sum in Singapore for a while, and we finally made a trip this morning to Tim Ho Wan, a famous dim sum restaurant. The original restaurant is in Hong Kong, and it won a Michelin Star! A branch was established in Plaza Singapura (off the Dhoby Ghaut station) I've been skeptical of dimsum in Singapore-- all the Chinese foods I've tried so far have only been variations of the original. Yes they were good, but I still preferred the originals because they tasted so much like home. While we were waiting, we were reading news articles about the restaurant and how popular it was. One article wrote about how a man purchased 50 buns. We were amused by the story-- why would one person ever purchase that many buns? However when we ate the bun and the food we immediately understood why. The food was absolutely mouthwateringly delicious! I've never had such scrumptious dimsum before. I found myself eating slowly to savor each bite and capture all the rich flavors and textures.
Here are the dishes we ordered:
Pork buns: soft and crispy, savory and sweet... Perfection! |
Sticky rice was phenomenal; meat was delicious |
The skin of the dumplings melted in our mouths |
After our meal, we walked to Orchard Road. Along the way, we stopped by Gong Cha, a desserts store popular in Singapore. I've been meaning to try Gong Cha for a while, so our chance encounter meant we definitely had to try it. I ordered the milk green tea with ai-yu jelly. The quality of milk tea/ Asian sweets is much better here than in the United States.
Upon our arrival at Orchard Road, we stopped by Royce Chocolate to shop for chocolates to bring as souvenirs back home. Royce Chocolate is a Japanese brand of chocolate and probably the best chocolate I've ever tasted; it is rich and creamy, and melts smoothly in the mouth! After we made our purchases, we split ways: Angelo and Laney headed back to PGP while Emily and I stayed to do some shopping.
When we returned, we grabbed dinner at the PGP canteen. I ordered Dan Dan noodle at Taipei Delights. I've never had any experiences with Taiwanese food in the states, so I enjoyed trying the new food.
yum yum yum
